Pregnancy induced eating disorders

I read in today's Monitor (30 September 2010), the section on pregnancy, the writer was seriously chastising all who approach her to "tap" her food with hands whose cleaninliness is suspect. That however was not her only stress. She is also disturbed by the fact that people can go out of their way to beg a pregnant woman for her food. Now i relate with her ever so much. Am not pregnant but boy oh boy workmates who feel like they are planned for in your meal plan for the day can be quite a stress factor. I have no issue with sharing but I prefer that you ask me, I offer to buy you your own and we take it from there. Am going through a phase where I count calories and try not to over indulge. The problem with having to share my food is that I feel like I am not as satisfied as I should be since my 230 calories would be reduced by one taking a bite off my meal!

About these eating disorders... do share what strange changes have happened in past pregnancies or are happening to you as we speak.
I remember when i was carrying No.1 (as we call him) i totally got off bread (my all time favourite breakfast bigenderako), milk tea (even my siblings didn't click this one), PORK (am still shocked about this one myself). I replaced all this with boiled sweet potatoes, cassava and such like :-) not forgetting peanut sauce. I ate Peanut sauce with anything. Fish, beef, greens name it. There was a restaurant across from my office that served food from the Northern region of Uganda. I can still remember the delight with which I watched the clock chime 12:30pm ( I adjusted my lunch time to suit my needs) to set me off on the slow waddle to the restaurant.
I was and still am afraid of putting on weight so I tried to be as healthy as I could by feeding mainly on fruit and greens in between meals and i must say it trully paid off. I gained a total of 13kgs and lost most of them after i gave birth only to gain back about 5 unwanted ones due to the myths of drinking porridge for breast milk manufacture. Just so you know the porridge was for nothing... my milk continued to refuse to gush out as some say it should.
So, tell me. What strange eating habits did you pick up during your pregnancy? have you automatically gone back to normal? have you lost most of your pregnacy weight?

Change is good... embrace it whole heartedly

If you have been or are pregnant you know what i mean by change... the changes we go through as we provide sustenance for the little beings developing in our womb are simply mindboggling. Just when you think it can't get any more dramatic.. life shows you a move and your body metamorphoses even further. I remember when i had my first baby. I couldn't wait for each subsequent stage as i gazed with amazement at my changing profile (side view in the mirror :-) ). When i couldn't see my toes by month 8 i would simply crack up with laughter and request the father of the baby to help me with the shoes. At my present petite size 16, I look at the clothes i fit my self into and wonder how i kept myself from jumping through a window given the rapid increase in girth. You ask how i managed? well i just laughed at life and at myself and basked in the knowledge that come Dday, i would instantaneously drop at least 8 of the many kilos now weighing me down. Oh did i mention how my bones would crack? As in literally squeak and crackle as the hips expanded to make way for the safe passage of my bundle of joy. I could go on and on.
Anyhow so change..... is good. expanding waistlines, change in diet, the painful breasts filled with milk, the loss of weight after you have gotten your hormones back in sync with what your heart desires, the sleepless nights that later turn back to normal. i remember a passage in the bible that says "this too shall pass".

Several Months later...

It is long since we last chatted.... We have moved home twice and are looking to finally set up at centenary gardens in Kampala Uganda. what can i say.. it has been a trully emotional journey and while i am not sure what to include or exclude from this blog, it is certain that this will be linked to the soon to be up and running Dear Mom Website... how exciting is that?
Anyhoooo.... If you are reading this i wonder what it is you are doing here :-). Was it by mistake? Was it because you are looking for some information? If so let me know what answers you seek and i shall see how to link you up with an answer.
My greatest concern when i was pregnant, was the weight gain. Fortunately i didn't have too much of the strange cravings so i was able to pretty much control what i ate. For both pregnancies, i gained about 14kgs. Then came the stress of loosing it... that will be a topic for another day.
What i would like to share with you is how i controled the weight gain in both pregnancies...
I read up on as much of the food types to eat as possible. Fully armed with this new knowledge, i went about surrounding my self, fridge and store with only that which was recommended (well mostly). I also knew that fad dieting and hunger strikes were an absolute no no so i endevoured to eat many small meals that had things like fruit, lots of vegetables (i feared and still do fear getting constipated) so i would endevour to put greens on atleast half of my plate. This blog has meandered like a problem so let me wrap it up and try to get my thoughts together. That said the one food advice piece I leave with you is:
Surround yourself with your favourites among the healthy foods (fruits, vegetables, lean meats and other protein sources as well as whole wheat and unrefined carbohydrates). I don't pretend to be a nutritionist so do check what you are not sure of with a specialist however once you know your food, you will have less of a problem organising your meals. let me know if you need us to have a further discussion around this.
The end :-)
